Celebrating the power of apprenticeships!

Former Quorum apprentice, Ryan Maitland, recently passed his SCQF Level 8 IT & Telecommunications Apprenticeship and was promoted to Support Analyst in our busy Managed Services team. Ryan joined us in September 2020 to start his Modern Apprenticeship in IT Systems & Networking (Level 6).

As an employer in the technology sector, we believe it is not only vitally important for the sector, but directly in our interests to offer roles, support, and progression to young people on all pathways. We promote a strong educational foundation, particularly in digital technologies, which in turn provides the much-needed talent to support the growth of the IT sector and related businesses in the future.

We foster a culture of diversity and equality within our company, encouraging individual interests where possibole and appropriate. Our relatively flat mangement structure ensures that our young people have clear, daily access to the leaders of the company and those senior staff who will work alongside teams on various projects.

We asked Ryan about his apprenticeship experience in Quorum and here is what he had to say:

“The whole apprenticeship experience was great, and I loved every minute of it. It was an amazing way of gaining knowledge through courses and units, as well as all the opportunities I have been presented with while working on the service desk with a very supportive team who are always there to assist, whether it be coursework or day to day tickets. I managed to complete the full 2 years in just over 1 year, which I am over the moon about.

One big thing that helped me get through the courses and units so quickly was the motivation I received from my team, they were helping me along the way, and I was given the time to focusas I was keen on getting it done as quickly as possible. I found some of the courses very interesting and certain parts have helped me understand how our clients’ environments work and I am able to feel more confident when dealing with these new technologies. Overall, it was amazing, and I am very thankful for the opportunity and support throughout the first stage of my Career. 

There were some challenges along the way as I didn’t have the opportunity to speak face to face with assessors and physically attend all the courses over the last year. I managed to overcome these minor challenges from the virtual support through screens from my colleagues and assessor, which all helped very much. Although it would’ve have been nice to meet in person, it was much easier doing everything virtually.“

We are so proud of the hard work and dedication that Ryan has shown and he is a strong addition to the team. We believe stories like these should be spread to encourage other young people to take similar paths and to acknowledge that there is no one route to a strong career in IT.
