Interview – Ryan McCartney – IT Support Analyst
We’re now on #9 of our series, where we get to find out how the newer Quorumites have found their experience of their first six months in role in Quorum. If you missed our last interview with Service Desk Lead, Marcus Campbell, you can find that here.
Today we find out a bit more about Ryan McCartney a fairly recent graduate who joined our Managed Service team as a Service Desk Analyst.
How were you introduced to Quorum?
I had a friend who was already working in the Service Desk team, so when I graduated University in October last year, he mentioned that there were openings, and he would be willing to pass my CV to the recruitment team.
The process was fairly fast after that. I was contacted by recruitment a few days later, had an interview with the hiring manager following that and was in the job pre-Christmas. Apparently, I was the first fresh grad that was hired, so that’s something!
What have you been up to in your first six months?
That’s a very big question as no two days are really the same on the Managed Service side of things, so it can become a bit of a blur in that sense. Rather than recalling specific days, it’s more remembering the topics of things you’ve worked on.
As well as the Service Desk activities, like answering tickets that come in and helping users, I’ve been getting involved with site visits and even assisting in project work. It’s a good test of adaptability and it’s a good challenge because you get exposure to so many different things, so it’s incredible experience.
Because of the variety of environments we work with too, it’s interesting that you can be working on newer, cutting edge technologies, and then see something and think “wow, that’s still in use!”
Tell us a bit about your team?
I enjoy working with my team, we do have a lot of site visits which splits us up every now and again, but for the most part I feel I’ve blended into the team well. Thankfully, I’ve had good feedback from people both inside and outside of the company which has been a really nice confidence boost.
Everyone has been really friendly and helpful and I’ve never felt afraid to ask questions. That’s the main thing that’s stood out to me, it’s not a strict “sink or swim” environment, Quorum has been very embracing of questions and they’re more than happy to hear it when you challenge the status quo. You’re listened to.
Can you think of any notable moments so far?
The easiest one to check off would be passing my probation, but that’s a bit boring, right?
The company BBQ is definitely a memorable one. Because of when I joined, I managed to miss out on the other two significant company events and so the BBQ was the first one I’d managed to attend and it was a really good time. The activities were a good laugh and it was nice getting to spend time with everyone.
What are you most proud of so far?
For me, it’s the certifications that I’ve passed, I had three in particular that were required as part of my role and I passed them within the six months of my probation. Those were the:
– MS-900, the Microsoft 365 Fundamentals exam.
– SC-900, the Security, Compliance, and Identity Fundamentals exam.
– AZ-900, the Azure Fundamentals exam.
What would you like to achieve in the next six months?
I have my eye on a few associate level certifications. I’ve been handling my workload well, so long may that continue as things get increasingly technical.
I’d like to get involved in more of the technical project work, but the honest, simple response is that I’d like to just stick in and continue doing more of what I’ve been doing, learning, and keep progressing. Every day is a learning day!
