Investing in the Next Generation of Employees – Abhi’s Story

Getting a foot on the career ladder can be challenging and people are finding that early in their careers, a lack of experience can hold them back.

A UCAS survey showed two-thirds of employers look for graduates with relevant work experience because it helps them prepare for work and develop general business awareness. Importantly, one-third of employers felt that applicants did not have a satisfactory level of knowledge about their chosen career or job (Source).

“Schools, colleges, and universities are keen to help their students close the gap between what they learn in the classroom, lecture hall or lab and the skills they will need to apply when they get a job. Engage with education and connect with young talent to shape your future workforce early on.” (Source)

Getting to know Abhi

Back in 2016, Quorum took on a school work experience student, Abhinav Jayanty. At the time, Abhi knew he wanted to attend University, but was unsure what his career aspirations were or what degree he should apply for. He knew he enjoyed Computing Science at school and considered courses covering computing, management, development, and software engineering. Quorum seemed like a good choice to help him decide which to pursue, because of our breadth and depth of experience across different technology areas.

At just 16, Abhi took quite a daunting week in his stride; visiting clients, learning about all the different departments and their functions, and shadowing some technical Quorum employees to get a flavour of the type of work they do.

Abhi went on to undertake a Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science at Heriot Watt University. Whilst at University, he discovered a passion for data and this set him on his career path. In particular he enjoyed Big Data and AI modules, with his final year dissertation being an evaluation of NoSQL (graph) data management and data mining techniques in the context of financial fraud prediction – (we were impressed too!!)

Fast forward to August 2022 and we were thrilled to have Abhi join our Data and AI team as a Junior Data Engineer. He has already achieved his first Microsoft Certification in Azure Data Fundamentals and we’re sure this is the first of many and a great career ahead.

Throughout my time at university, I found that I had a better understanding of the modules and coursework relating to database management or data mining and analysis compared to other topics. I stayed in close contact with the data team at Quorum as they grew and evolved, and with other employees through LinkedIn and sponsored events etc.

Joining Quorum was almost a no-brainer for me having experienced the friendly and supportive culture firsthand as well as seeing how rapidly the company is expanding, which is really exciting to be a part of now!

Investing in Young People

It just makes sense to Quorum to invest in young people, Abhi’s story is testament to this.

We’ve talked previously about our recruitment style and how being open to all kinds of people and styles is important, especially in the midst of a skills shortage, when recruiting is tougher than ever. As an employer in the technology sector, it is directly in our interests to promote a strong educational foundation, particularly in digital technologies, which in turn provides the much-needed talent to support the growth of the IT sector and related businesses in the future.

Put simply, it’s a win/win and we couldn’t be happier that Abhi chose to join Quorum after his experience here.
