Alastair Reynolds my first six months in Quorum

Interview – Alastair Reynolds -Senior Software Developer

We’ve had a lot of employees join Quorum during and post-pandemic and we wondered what their experience was like of joining the company. So this is the first in a series of interviews that we’ll be releasing in the coming months, from Quorumites that have passed their probationary period, asking them to reflect on the first six months in their role.

How were you introduced to Quorum?

I was job hunting in general and was looking for a flexible company as I wanted to work from home more due to family commitments. I saw Quorum through LinkedIn, I think. I knew Jonathan Douglas from a previous job and so asked him about the company, his feedback was high praise, indeed, and so I went for it.

I was interviewed and had chats with a couple of different departments about Development and SharePoint on the Consultancy side. I got a good vibe from the company, everyone I spoke to seemed genuinely happy and my correspondence with Jackie Begbie was nice.

What have you been up to in your first 6 months?

I got straight onto a SharePoint migration project for Warwick University. After that I got involved with Malcolm Group, working with SharePoint and Power Platform, including a 3-day crash course at their offices on Power Apps. I’ve also worked on Lindsays solicitors on their new Intranet.

What has been your most notable moment?

The AGM, that was amazing. I’ve never seen an AGM like it and it was a really good experience just to see people joking around and being that comfortable with each other and it just gave such a good vibe about the whole company. I’ve seen so many of these things be stilted, rigid, and formal and just boring waffling, but this was great and was a stand-out for me.

How has your experience been of joining a team that has hybrid working?

It’s not been a challenge at all and I think that’s probably down to the quality of the people there. Everyone has been friendly, approachable, and really knowledgeable. It’s a very nice feeling having so much brain power behind you as a backup. I’ve never really had that before, that level of backup and knowledgeable people.

Has working for Quorum been different from other employers?

Yes, it’s very different, it’s much more relaxed here. The work life balance is perfect for me and you’re trusted to just get on with things which is nice and refreshing. It’s an easy company to work for.

What do you hope to achieve in your next 6 months in Quorum?

Certifications! It’s not something I’ve had need for in the past, but this time around it’s something all my peers have, it benefits Quorum’s Microsoft partnership status and so it’s something I’d like to work towards. I’ll start with Power Platform and then whatever else comes my way.
